BBC filming - Signing Shakespeare Project

On Monday 19th February, the BBC came to video our students taking part in a Shakespeare drama workshop exploring the play ‘The Tempest’.

Our school has been working in partnership with Dr Abigail-Woodall from the University of Birmingham and Tracy Irish from the RSC Theatre.  We have been supporting them in their ‘Signing Shakespeare Project’ which involves the creation of amazing online resources and activities to support teachers teaching Shakespeare to Deaf pupils.

Previously, we have provided feedback on new resources for the play ‘Macbeth’. Tracy and Abigail are now beginning to develop materials for ‘The Tempest’ and hope to receive funding to develop these further.

We will be involved in an extensive project on ‘The Tempest’ later in the year where a selection of pupils will perform extracts from the Tempest at the REP Theatre in Birmingham alongside Deaf professional actors.

This exciting project had been picked up by ‘BBC Morning Live’ who wanted to come and record a 7 minute segment to explain the work that has been happening. Film crews, presenters, producers and interpreters were in school for 5 hours filming workshops, interviewing staff and pupils and finding out more about this amazing project.

Our pupils were fantastic and really made us proud.

We are now awaiting a date where we will appear on the BBC Morning Live show!
